installing lights in plaster ceiling

Posted by Denise on January 1st, 2002 08:51 PM

Hi! I just bought a co-op apartment in a building built in
1928. I want to have some recessed lights or can lights
installed in the ceiling, but an electrician has told
me that doing so will likely disturb the very old and
thick plaster, and will cause the ceiling to crack and
damage within a year or so after installation of the lights.
Is this true? If so, how do I get around the problem?
And if not, is there anything I have to be aware of
before I hire someone to undertake the installation?
Any help very much appreciated.
