Installing a pump in existing sump

I'm a first time homeowner and have a relatively new home that has a sump in the basement but no pump. From what I can tell it is an ideal sump (e.g. proper depth, width, and with plastic sides and gravel in bottom). I don't know what my options are for adding a sump properly... Do I need to do a lot of new plumbing? Can the pump be drained to the small basement sewer drain? We recently had heavy rains... The sump has some water in it (standing, slowly going down). But with the sump I'd like to explore putting in a pump.
