Inexpensive way to cover Formica?

I live in a rental home and I don't want to spend a ton of money. My problem is off-white with gold fleck formica countertop in the kitchen circa 1960s. It's burned in spots due to an apparent fire with a former tenant, and it's just plain yuck!
I really want to cover it somehow, because actually putting in new countertops is out of the question. Does anyone have any suggestions?
