Good points all, Harold. I might only add that In many localities you need to get a permit and inspection for a woodstove install. Or, your homeowners insurance may require this even if your town doesn't. Also, having a woodstove in the basement could, in itself be the reason for being smokey. Basements are notoriously bad locations because of the potential for double the normal "stack effect". It might not be possible to have a smoke free installation in your particular basement.
