Paul, you say you live in Michigan. Well, if you live in the UP, your method of insulation may result in cracked, damaged basement walls. The problem is that if you live where the frost can go down 4 feet into the ground, insulating the inside of the basement walls will prevent enough heat loss into the ground around the walls. As the ground freezes, it will push on the walls, possibly causing failure. One way to prevent this is to add insulation in the ground for about 4 feet out from the wall, about 1 foot deep in the ground. this will keep the frost from penetrating.
