Hi Steve
The link Jay provides to Hometime is a good one.

The only thing I would add is that ridge-venting, using externally baffled ridge vents in conjunction with soffit vents in the unfinished attic is your best method of keeping the back side of the roof the same temperature as the exposed roof.....which if you can attain this will mean that you will never have an ice dam and your attic will be as cool as it can naturally be in the heat of the summer. Of course, you must, as the Hometime site points out, insulate all openings into the attic to prevent the warmer air below from rising into the attic.
