I wouldn't fool around with stains

Tom, I've used Minwax on furniture I've built but I wouldn't use it or any other stain on bricks. My kitchen's being built now and I'm having a mason lay a brick floor (to the horror of my friends!) because I love the look and feel of the texture and warm hues. The advice I'm going to go with is to use Butcher's wax - initially and often for a couple years - the bricks will begin to take on a beautiful, warm patina and will need less and less care.

If you don't want to put that kind of time and work into your floor, experiment with stains on loose bricks (not part of your floor) and make sure your experimental bricks are the same kind of bricks because some bricks are more porous than others and will look very different.

Let me know what you do - maybe you'll have a better answer for me by the time I'm ready to tackle mine.

Good luck!
