and while I'm not an electrician, it sounds like the bright light you saw at the switch was the wires behind it making contact and drawing load. If the insulation on the two hot legs have worn away, the two legs could be completing the circuit before they get to the switch. I'd take the 2x4 box out and see if the hot legs haven't fused together making a complete circuit and thus be keeping the light on.
