others may have had sucess with it.

The paper veneer will not hold paint at all. Now once your remove the paper, you have glued together saw dust that does not like moisture. Moisture makes it swell up and bubble and do all sorts of things.

Paint has moisture, so there is my feelings on it.

consider installing 1/8 inch ply wood, like birch over the material using glue and tacks, then you can stain or paint that.
