My Victorian home has a beautiful stairway, except for the fact that the steps are very scratched, and the orange varnish just has to go. I have tried using a sander to sand the steps and have not gotten very good results. I have also tried letting Bix remover set on them for 10 minutes or so, then scraping the old varnish off w/ a putty knife. This also, has not given the best results. Does anyone know of a stripper other than Bix that they can recommend? Or possibly, of any other method that I can try? My stairway has rather intricate moldings and carvings, and I do not think that sandpaper will do it alone. Thank You very much for any help and/or advisement you can give me.
