I'm with BobB, you can achieve the same look as vinyl paper with formica. Formica is the Nuggets for walls behind counters/ i.e. backspash areas, as it is so easy to clean and impervious to water and grease, etc.. I always use two coats of contact cement on each surface. If you want to change then you can then put new formica over old or vinyl paper over the formica (maybe). Don't be fooled by the thickness of the vinyl paper as it still shows through most wall imperfections. You would have to skim coat or overlay the entire backsplash area and prep smooth and primer/size etc. otherwise the texture will show through.
