There is nothing wrong with using roofing nails with the 1/4" WonderBoard. It is thin and can fragment fairly easy while trying to countersink a screw into it. I have noticed, however, with the thicker cement backerboards that the vibrations from the hammer pounding will loosen and pull some nails from time to time. I wouldn't use anything but screws for HardiBacker.

By the way U.S. Gypsum will be introducing a new panel that supposably will replace all cement and gypsum based panels needed in a home.

Then if a tile installer ran short on backerboard he/she could bum some off the drywall man....
