Rick, If I've understood correctly, these 4X8's will be spanning at least 20' (standard width/depth of a 2-car garage). That's 400 square feet of insulation, drywall, and T&G pine on a maximum of 6 - 4X8 beams; not huge, but it's no small load, and I doubt it would meet code.

Ask your construction friend about using a strongback or reverse truss/beam; these all install above the beams, helping to disperse load and carry the balance to the exterior walls.

Check into your options, and get in touch with a structural engineer & your building inspector's office to be sure whatever you do will meet their approval.
