I agree that Steve is probably right and there is particle board under the butcher block. But, if the countertop is solid butcher block I suggest that you use heavy duty pipe clamps and a polyurethane glue such as Gorilla Glue to reglue the countertop. I did this with a solid butcher block about three years ago, and so far it has not come unglued.

You need to keep the butcher block sealed next to sink! As you have learned the hard way, it's not a good idea to use this material next to a sink...
