How exactly do you replace stair treads? I covered instead

In the past I ripped the front off of each step and then place a new bull nose from Home Depot on top of each tread. I replaced everything else with standard hardwood flooring. I sanded and finished in place.

I don't understand how I could possibly remove the existing tread. The sides are inserted into routed grooves, and it is nailed and glued to the risers.
