How do I fix a botched exterior paint job?

Posted by RangerBob on November 9th, 2000 05:55 PM

I was out of town for about 8 days with work. My wife and one of her friends decided to paint the wood trim on my house (it was green, now it has one coat of white).

The problem is that they did not bother to do any prep work (not even washing off the dust). They didn't look for loose paint. They didn't caulk. They just painted a large portion of the trim.

After 5 days I can already see mildew coming through. The peeling is just around the corner (I have no idea how long).

I painted the trim about six years ago and did a pretty good job. I had seen no paint peeling, and the house probably could have gone another 2-4 years before needing paint again. The previous paint was exterior latex, and the botched coat of white is also exterior latex.

What can I do? My house looks vandalized. Do I put on another coat (so it will look OK for a while) and await the peeling? Is there some way to remove the white paint?
