We just completed this ourselves. We used concrete deck blocks for a 9x11 deck (used 36 of them) with 2x10's set 14" on center. Then more 2x10s for the decking. We just set the deck blocks on the existing concrete patio.
Just passed the city inspection and inspector was so impressed with the deck block idea he is building a gazebo with them.
