Well Greg, as I mentioned in my first post, The lights referred to as "can" lights are sold and rated for direct insulation contact. They are available in a remodeling design which incorporates expansion anchors which flip out and can be tightened from the room side.I have placed them along side of 'joists'. In the southern Ohio area the entire fixture sells for about $10 at the local "super" stores. This does not include the final trim which seems to come in a huge variety of decorator options.
In my ranch style home I have alowed the ceiling insulation to contact the sides of these fixtures, however I did not allow the insulation to go over the top of the fixture as a precaution against heat build up.
