Hi DD, Dimmers and their faceplates normally do get hot especially when the lights are dimmed low..because the dimmer is acts like a restriction to electricity flow your your light fixtures and bulbs to make them glow dimly. Since it is restricting electricity flow, it causes the dimmer switch circuitry to get hot and dissipate the energy in the form of heat. Hope this helps...I don't think anything is wrong with your dimmer....if the lights are on full brightness the dimmer switch should be much cooler.
