Holy Cow, Batman! How Much Sag?

Posted by Dodgeman on February 5th, 2001 01:43 PM

Well, I went and did it. My wife was saying that she could notice a sag in the family room floor as she walked across it. Since we are having the carpet replaced in that room, I pulled up all the old carpet and pad. Then I took my trusty straightedge with level and measured the actual sag. There is an area over the span of 5 floor joists that gradually sags down 3/4" and back up again. The joists span 13' 6" and the max sag is near the center of the room. Now that I know how much it is, I feel the need to do something about it. The question is what? The floor below is open and the joists are exposed, so I could sister other 2x10's to the 3 sagging ones, but there is also a LOT of wiring running and a gas line through the joists that I would have to pull out and restring. So that solution doesn't sound attractive. I could try some type of floor leveling compound, etc. but never having used any, I don't feel comfortable with that solution either.
Any other thoughts or ideas?
Thanks in advance,
