Personally, I've never done this, and wouldn't advise it. Should you decide to sell the house, you may lose a buyer or 2 or more. This type of job is expensive to 'undo'. It's not like taking down wallpaper and painting the walls instead. BUT, if you insist ...

Take the wall that has the bedroom door on it. Using that wall, and the adjoining wall CLOSEST to the door, 'mark' a 90 degree mark in the corner. From that corner-mark, go out to the center of the room at a 45 degree angle, and mark the spot, then continue to the corner on-the-diagonal, and mark the spot. Connecting the 2 corners with the center mark will give you the proper angle (to the rest of the room) to lay the strips. Work your way from the center TOWARDS the 2 UNMARKED corners.
