Not having seen that floor, none of us are able to tell you any specifics about what will be needed in the way of possible repairs. You might be surprised to see a very nice floor still visible when you remove the carpeting and foam pad. Let's hope so. Now, if you need to refinish the floor and/or replace some boards (if they have become damaged), you need to look for a professional contractor who specializes in wood floors. Ask for references, check the BBB, check the references, and go to see some of the work that the prospective contractor has done. If the floor needs to be refinished, it may involve sanding off the old finish, sealing, staining, and recoating with at least 3 coats of durable polyurethane varnish. Hardwood floors can be made to look like new by this process. The costs will vary, depending upon the part of the country you are in, and by how much work (manhours and special equipment) is involved. Good luck to you. You may get some ballpark costs estimates from others, if you tell us what part of the country you are in.
