Henry in MI - Finishing dry wall on ceiling?

I have the same situation. Now, how do i finish the
patch in the ceiling? Should I tape it? If so, how
do I do this since the tape would be half on the already
existing ceiling that is in good shape? Do I take a
knife and scrape off the good ceiling texture so that the
tape is then flush on the ceiling? And, once I get it taped
and mudded, how do I get the same ceiling texture
effect? Mine currently looks like someone took a short
mop or mitten and touched it on the ceiling. And will standard
drywall mud be ok for this? It's not that pebbble looking texture.
Thank you...
