i purchased a house (built in 1963). it has a septic system. the area is prone to flooding. in the basement are two sump pump holes. one is always dry (sump #1) and the other always has standing water(sump #2). the utility tub (and washer) drains into sump #2. also, there are three drains in the floor (one per room) which drain into this hole. this sump hole with the standing water emits a sewage type smell regularly. it seems that when i run water into it the smell will go away for a short time (usually a day or two). then it returns. is there supposed to be standing water in this hole? the dry hole doesn't smell. it seems the smell from the hole will make the 3 drains smell as well. i have poured water down the drains hopeing to fill the trap and stop the smell. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. any suggestions?
