Don't know how popular it is in New England but if you have the room for it consider Geothermal (also called ground source heat pump). Very economical to operate but the equipment is more expensive. You'll need trenches dug for a ground loop (propably impractical because of the rock in the area) or wells drilled to drop the loops into. We've had for six years (in Ohio) and are very pleased with it.
