Heat Trace

I recently expirienced some ice daming on the roof gutter (rain catch)
on the large low pitched side of our house. After removing the ice I
ran some left over 'Rope light' in the gutter for heat trace. This is
rated for exterior use! At about 4w/ft it is about the same as exterior
heat trace cable.
I only plug it in when I need it or run it off a timer, is seams to work.
Question is when snow covers the rope light am I getting efficient heating
or is 1/2 of the energy being wasted in light.
Will it help to paint it black to turn more of the light into heat?

If I need to purchase specific roof heat trace, what will this cost,
the roof is approx 20 ft long.
