We're installing central heat and are trying to figure out if we should get a heat pump or propane (we don't have natural gas). I'm in San Jose, northern California, but in the hills a little (maybe 1700 ft). It frosts most nights, but not enough to freeze the pipes in the barn, which are exposed. There was one real cold spell where the pipes did freeze, I am guessing it was in the 20's. Usually, I think we're in the 30's (as the low). Daytime temperatures are in the 50's.
So the question is, we have heard a lot of horror stories about heat pump not providing enough heat. Will we be able to get enough heat or will we be using suplemental a lot (which is expensive)? I just don't want to go through this whole thing and STILL be cold!
