heat pump noise on roof

What kind of noise-absorbing material can be used under a heat pump located on a roof of a building? I live on the top floor of an apartment building and the noise from the heat pump units above is driving me mad (much like Nancy). The units are sitting on just a couple pieces of wood (2x4s) on the roof and they probably are not doing a sufficient job of absorbing the sound and vibration. Any advice? Thanks.
