Someone posted this idea last year for keeping ice from forming - but it should work for you too -

Fill a sock or nylon stocking with salt or driveway-ice-melting-pellets and lay it in the gutter. Or you can just pour the stuff directly into the gutter (or on top of the ice) - but you'll want to limit the amount of silt that goes down the spout so it doesn't clog. Does your downspout go into a drain or does it just empty out at the bottom? If it just empties, you can put all the salt you want down it. (and replace the dead grass in the spring!)
