I'll try to help but I have a few questions --The 220 cartridges that were replaced were they fuses?I'll assume they were fuses and the bad compreessor blew the fuses. The compressor should be avail. if it's 5.5 yrs. old call another contractor you can also try to call G.E to check on the avail.of the compressor.Having said that those thru the wall units are a real pain to work on that's why he wants to replace the unit. If the compressor failed due to burn out (acid in the system) you'll have to replace the reversing valve and drier along with the compressor.Sounds like you should replace the unit and get the extedended warranty on the compresor your contractor should know about it.
