Header for non-load bearing wall

Posted by Charles McCullough on January 26th, 2003 04:15 PM

I want to widen a cased opening in a non-load bearing wall and need advice regarding the header.

The opening is currently 4-ft wide and has a laminated header built from two 2*4's and 1/2-in plywood in the middle. The header is supported by single jack studs at each end.

I want to widen this opening to 11-ft. The vertical dimension between the top of the opening and the ceiling is 1-ft - this area is covered with drywall.

My question is: what type and dimension header is required to span 11-ft on a non-load bearing wall.
