Charles, If that 1 ft. of vertical area includes the header, I would use a double 2X10 w/spacer, which matches your total of 12" from the ceiling drywall if you have a double top plate. If you have a single top plate, add a 2X4 flat below the top plate along with the double 2x10.

You can also use a double 2X12 w/spacer below a single top plate for a total of 12 1/2" below the ceiling drywall. If you don't have room to accommodate the extra 1/2" in the shimmed area of your casing, I'd rip the 1/2" off of on a tablesaw first.
