Have any deck building tips?

Posted by Dave on August 20th, 1999 09:00 AM

I have been challenged with rebuilding a deck & stairs - with some odd characteristics. I have some ideas, but if anyone wants to throw some tips my way - either general building tips or tips about this particular situation - they might be helpful. (I'm not a novice, but I'm open to ideas/recommendations --> like how would YOU attach the joists to the posts? How would YOU brace the stair stringers?) Thanks....

*six feet wide, six feet tall, extends five feet out from the side of the building.
*There's a stairwell underneath the deck.
*The only posts I can use will be positioned five feet from the building. (i.e. A ledger board is needed on the building.)
*The posts have to sit on a concrete slab (that already exists) so they won't be anchored to the ground very well.
*One end has to remain open to provide access to the stairwell - i.e. I can't use cross-bracing.
*The other end is where the stairs down from the deck will be.
