Hardwood Flooring / Luan Underlayment

Posted by Dan Szepesi on November 25th, 2002 05:54 AM

I am getting conflicting advice and hope to get some feed back here.

I intend to install engineered hardwood (floating style) in a second floor bedroom. The existing floor is 30 + years old, seems to be thin, brittle tiles. The existing tiles are breaking up under the bed from the pressure of the wheels.

The advice I got from the local hardware store was to remove the tiles, then screw/nail down a layer of Luan plywood to make a nice, solid base. Then, lay the foam underlayment over the plywood, and put the floor down.

Conflicting advice is to leave the current tile in place, and lay the hardwood flooring over top of the tiles, filling the holes in the tile where they have broken up with cheap tiles of a similar thickness.

Any help on this debate ?
