Hardwood floor stains

Yes, I have looked through all previous postings. I found little that helped. Please be patiently helpful. It will be greatly appreciated.(I'm the 'Hardwood Floors for Dummies' type.)

I just bought my first house. It was built in '48, I had checked the corners and found it to have wood floors under the 60's era shag. First thing I did was rip out all of the carpet just to find very dark stains in numerous areas as well as lighter colored stains in the high traffic areas that I can only assume is from where the pad and adhesive broke down.

I knew that it would have to be refinished. I have now sanded off the varnish and the stains remain! These stains cover to much area for me to be able to afford board replacement. I did read something about bleaching and shellacing...though I didn't really understand the shellacing part. Is it possible to get these stains out? And if not could I stain the floor dark enough to hide them or will the stained areas only get darker as well? Please Help!

Thanx in advance.
