Hi Eve,

Normally your hardwood should run at 90 degrees to your joists. Depanding on your subfloor, is it tounge and groove or plywood. If it is tounge and groove you should run the hardwood 90 degrees to the grooves. In either case you can lay down another subfloor and run any way you like.
