I would also suggest hardiplank siding rather then vinyl, primarily for duribilty and the options of changing color. I stongly disagree about not using nail guns for hardiplank. Read the installation instructions of the manufactor @ Use a nail gun with a depth adjuster to sink the nails flush. James Hardie specfically states to not sink nails past flush; if you break the surface by counter sinking you either void the warrenty or cause more work for yourself by having to fill the hole and add another fastner. If you decide to install hardiplank yourself there are other cutting options which reduce the amount of dust produced.
Just the opinions of someone who has put on several hundred square of siding, worth what you paid for them.
