I always adhere to the principal you can make a stain job darker, but you cannot make a stain job from darker to lighter.

Use the wood conditioner its great for pre staining, and also, any stain with polyurethane mixed in is very hard to make it darker or to even change the stain color, because the poly will dry and make the next stain wipe not take because of the poly seals the job.

So, get a minwax product without poly. Wipe in the direction of the grain, use a special staining cloth or pad, and when filling in holes, make sure the filler is stainable, most are not and will show big time.
