I have seen pictures of floating shelves installed and they made a great telephone stand, vase holder, corner shelf unit. There are plenty of places that they can be used to great advantage, particularly where they can be painted to match the wall and the items you are trying to display appear to almost be floating. Great idea and I was not trying to argue. I'll save that for the metal studs versus wood studs debate.
By the way, I found that when you cut plugs for filling a screw hole, if you stay shorter than about 3/8", you don't get any burning. I was cutting the plugs to the full depth of the cutter (about 3/4") and getting a lot of burning that left a brown ring where every plug was glued in.
