Hanging drywall from "truss"

Posted by Rick on February 25th, 2003 10:14 PM

I'm trying to soundproof a garage and figure out what kind of ceiling to put in.
On suggestion was as follows:
1) Bolt on a new 2x6" to each existing 2x6" rafter for reinforcement
2) About 1/2 way up the rafters, and for each rafter (now consisting of two rafters bolted together), bolt on a 2x6 and run it to the
rafter on the opposing side and bolt it there as well - - thus, forming a type of "truss" system ?
Looking from the side, it forms a capital "A" - the sides being the rafters and the line down the
middle being the trusses.
3) Now, I can hang drywall and soundboard above/below the "truss" 2x6's ?

Does this sound feasible to anyone ? Any problems ? In addition to the bolts, is there
a secondary securing system for securing the "truss" 2x6's to the rafters ?

Thanx much
