Actually there is a leather gasket at the end of the shaft. Generally these go bad and have to be replaced. You might have to manufacture the gasket yourself. Not too tough. In addition you need to use some very light virgin grease to put on it to help it to maintain its suction. The grease is actually a silicone product. Any grease product you use has to be consumable. So make sure you read the ingreadients and make sure its plumbers heat proof grease.
