Gutter question

Posted by Chris Campbell on August 20th, 1998 02:55 PM

I've decided to replace the gutters on my house, and I have a fascia decision to make. It was originally built with no fascia at all, and
half-round gutters were hung in front of exposed rafters. There is no soffit. The house was vinyl sided about twenty years ago, and
the siding contractor put up scrap wood, mis-sized fascia boards to attach the aluminum trim. New gutters were then put up with
spike and ferrel on top of this. Now I have un-sided the house, and am having the gutters replaced, so I am tearing down all of the
make-shift fascia and aluminum trim to make way for the new gutters, which will be on hangers, not spike and ferrel.

Here is my question...

Should I just remove everything and clean up the rafter tails, leaving them exposed for the gutter guys (this would be the cheapest,
easiest and fastest thing, but are there any disadvantages to this?) or...
Should I install new fascia all around the house? I have seen both examples in my neighborhood. Are there aesthetic issues that I'm
not thinking of? Is there any benefit either way?
