Grounding Conductors

I own a home built in the late 40's. All the outlets were the two prong 20 amp ungrounded type. This is a problem with appliances that use a a 3 prong plug with the ground conductor. Using adapters is highly discouraged as they really do not provide a proper ground path in the majority of cases.
