granite countertops

Posted by Monica on February 12th, 1998 11:36 PM

I was fortunate enough to attain a large quantity of polished granite slabs which I want to cut into counter tops. I have an old radial arm saw that I was going to convert into a stone cutting saw by connecting a water line to the blade area and installing a diamond bit blade and a large bed with rollers to handle the granite slabs.
Q 1. What grit grinder blade would I use for the main cutting?
Q 2. What is the procedure used to butt two pieces together to make a perfect joint? (on a 16' run of countertop)
Q 3. Do I need a plywood bed installed under the granite slab for support, the granite is 1 1/4" thick.
Q 4. To polish the edges, I know I can use a grinder with various grit wheels from rough to fine but exactly what are the grits I need?
Any other info you can give me would be great, and please don't tell me to hire a professional because that isn't an option!
