Goodbye pocket door

Scott,Iwould remove the drywall from one side so you can remove the pocket frame.Being carefull pry the frame from the other side so as to keep damage of this drywall to a minimum.

You should have a headered opening that is twice the pocket door width(plus 1- 1/2"or so)and your height should be 6'10-1/2" or 6'11"(a little bigger is OK)

I would install a prehung unit here,metal or solid core wood,make sure you get the swing(left or right)that works for you.Add 1/2" to 3/4" to your jamb width for your rough opening and install two studs from the header to the floor plate.Two studs give you more nailing for your trim.

Stud the rest of the space 16" on center,insulate and drywall.Luck
