I can understand your frustration. I may have your answer ...

Hamsters, guinee pigs (sp), geribles (sp), etc., etc., love to chew on cedar. If you ever had these types of rodents for pets, I'm sure that's what you usually put in their cage. Anyway, I would suspect the stain you're using is water-based. You may need to go to an oil-based stain. Assuming my theory is right, buy some oil-based stain and brush it onto just the bottom portion of the cedar where the animals are chewing (and could chew). Perhaps do one side of house that's not too conspicious. I bet that the petroleum in the stain will 'deter' the squirrels and rabbits. If this doesn't work, contact the SPCA, a professional painter, or even the manufacturer of your existing stain to discuss your problem. The manufacturer may be the best one to contact first because they do all the research and I'm sure you aren't the first person to call them.
