Go with Satin finish

If you choose a gloss finish, it will show imperfections and the least but of dust, but with satin finish much less maintenance, you'll have the look of bare wood with great protection. The guy who did my house used Helmenmans Spar Urthene. What a durable finish, WOW.

I would wait for the experts to explain the best stain choices and exact procedures. I know you will be better off with oil-based poly than with water, however you will need plenty of ventilation...
