No matter how hard you try, a first timer will NOT make consistently sized trusses. They are difficult to make, require structural engineering skill to design properly for local code requirements, and if you build them yourself, are harder to get from the ground to the final installation, because it is unlikely you will be able to build them where they will end up.

Manufactured trusses are reliable, consistent and incredibly inexpensive. Around here, a 40 foot truss can be had for less than $100, which is a real bargain in my book. At twice that cost, it would still be worth the headaches of trying to figure out what you're doing. Besides that, they come on a really neat truck that will usually deliver them to the top of the house, and in some cases, even stand them upright and help you get them installed.

Have fun with your project and please be careful walking around on the tops of your walls...

best of luck!
