I personally wouldn't waste my time trying to cobble together a fix. Replacing these doors should be pretty straight forward and there is no need to destroy walls or anything. You will be a lot happier with new, modern, tight, no draft, quiet Anderson sliders. Granted, they don't give them away for free, so you need to budget this in. Just remove the trim inside and out and back out the screws that hold in the frame and it will come right out (after removing the heavy panes). Install your new units, re-apply your trim, and you are done. It is a good weekend project. Depending on the size of the new units you might have to use larger (wider) trim boards inside and out to cover any boo boos.
Good luck
