If the bricks are unpainted and still pourous - I would paint with a portland cement & paint mixture (like Drylock - only not necessarily a top-of-the-line product like Drylock) That will fill in the holes. Then you may want to go back over it with a more glossy paint - perhaps an enamel or polyurethane based paint.
